How to read a prior-art matrix

A prior-art matrix is a grid that maps each feature of your invention against each of the closest prior-art patents, so you can see at a glance which features are already disclosed and where the genuinely new "white space" is. Rows are the core features of your invention; columns are the closest prior-art patents; each cell shows how strongly that patent discloses that feature. It is the fastest way to turn a stack of patents into one legible picture.

Reading the cells

  • A strong cell means the patent clearly discloses that feature.
  • A weak or empty cell means it does not - a potential point of novelty.
  • A patent that fills every row is the most dangerous: on its own it may be novelty-destroying.
  • Features that stay empty across all columns are your white space - the parts of the idea no one has published.

X / Y / A: the examiner's shorthand

Patent examiners tag references with a standard code that a good matrix lets you reach yourself, per patent:

  • X - discloses everything relevant on its own (novelty-destroying).
  • Y - discloses part; relevant only when combined with another reference (goes to inventive step).
  • A - background only; technological context, not a novelty threat.
